Natural Capital, whether recognized or not, plays a crucial role in our economy. To help clarify the relationship between economic activities and natural capital, Except and NXTE developed the Natural Capital Quick Scan. The scan delivers instant insight and suggests dozens of ways to mitigate risks and pick up on opportunities.

Commissioned by Platform BEE (Biodiversity, Ecosystems, and Economy) and part of the Natural Captains trajectory, Except and NXTE joined forces to transform the existing Biodiversity Ecosystem Services Quick Scan.

Besides leading the project, Except played an active role in designing new concepts with more transparent navigation through a more structured and extended information flow. Contracted web technology developer NXTE was given the task of building it.

The result is the Natural Capital Quick Scan that raises awareness on pressing and occurring natural capital business challenges in the blink of an eye. It is a management tool to quickly exhibit potentially significant impacts and dependencies resulting from an organization's operation and supply chains.

  • It has provided PBEE with a more sophisticated Natural Capital Quick Scan.

This tool is a source of information and inspiration related to biodiversity and ecosystem services, leading organizations towards potential opportunities and alternative practices that reduce associated risks. Five specific sectors are included; apparel, floriculture, dairy, beer, and paint. The scan further provides an option for expanding and addressing other sectors too.

Sustainability professionals, senior managers, and other decision-makers can go through a short series of questions using three predefined answers. The result is a clear and sector-specific table summarizing focus areas divided over six impact categories; use of land, climate change, raw materials, overexploitation, biodiversity, pollution, and waste. The scan is currently available in English and Dutch.

By providing an abstract of spear points the scan supports focus, goal setting and brings informed decision making in the boardroom while creating, investigating, and executing natural capital policies. The Natural Capital Quick Scan is the pragmatic start of your business roadmap from negative impact to positive contribution.
