The city of Almere in the Netherlands is faced with vast expansion plans. We supported the municipality with research-by-design, using the Orchid City framework, testing different urban densities, including climate-adaptive strategies, soil and water-based approaches.
The visual research helps to define the programmatic ratio between housing and jobs, incorporates Orchid City principles, and utilizes 12-minute neighborhood strategies. Using the extensive Orchid City database, we were able to link these to job creation, liveability, water, energy self-sufficiency and circularity principles.
In several phases, closely cooperating with the internal team at Almere city council, we produced several innovative strategies for creating future-proof and resilient urban environments.
Besides data-driven analysis and strategic scenario's, we helped to visualize the consequences of different approaches with first-person perspectives and info-graphics to communicate across stakeholder groups.
